Royal Rumble 2011 - And The Winner is......

Yes, the 2011 WWE Royal Rumble has just finished, for the first time it was a 40 man Rumble match numbers 1 & 2 being CM Punk & Daniel Bryan and number 40 being Kane. We all expected surprises and returns and we got Booker T who didn't last too long and we also got Kevin Nash as Diesel who looked impressive when he came in but again, didn't last too long, maybe Nash is going to stay around as it looked like he had a bit of a stare down with the Big Show on his way to the back, maybe a Wrestle Mania match in the offereing there.
I thought WWE would go with a proven star to win to push Wrestle Mania down our throats, the last 4 were John Cena, Wade Barrett, Alberto Del Rio & Randy Orton. Out of these 4 I'd of probably liked to of seen Barrett win but thought it would be Cena but really hoped it wouldn't. Alex Riley had been eliminated earlier but came down to distract Cena who was then thrown over the top rope by WWE champion The Miz who was doing commentary at ringside. Now the other boys at the table were saying how there was no DQ in this match but still, how the hell can it stand when you are eliminated by someone NOT in the match? WWE craziness rears it's ugly head again. Anyway, Barrett was eliminated by Orton and then Orton by the winner Alberto Del Rio, but no wait, there was someone still there who wasn't elimintaed earlier, he was under the ring yes, Santino Marella with Cobra in tow went for Del Rio but not even the WWE is that crazy and the man from Mexico tossed out the tattooed joke Marella to win the 2011 Royal Rumble.

Nash & Booker T To Appear At The Rumble?

Oldish news now, lol, anything after a few hours on the 'net is old news but anyway, as anyone who reads my blogs will know I have predicted Nash would appear and now it seems to of been confirmed along with the return to the WWE of Booker T. Now, most of the Rumble 'surprises' have been just that but somehow, if true, it has been leaked that the two are returning tonight on PPV for the WWE in the 40 man Royal Rumble.
I don't care much for Booker T, best thing he ever did in wrestling was in the WWE when he was alligned with Goldust and that was only because of the hilarious backstage skits. Nash is someone I have always liked, maybe he is not the best worker but he knows how to work. Looking forward to the Rumble, well at least the last 20 mins or so but the undercard, hmmmmmm, Ziggler winning the title would be a turn up for the books, but that's about it.

Hope the WWE fans amongst you enjoy the PPV.

Royal Rumble 2011 - What Will Happen?

On the weekend before the Royal Rumble we are still trying to guess what surprises if any will take place. The now 40 man Rumble match itself still has wrestlers to be named so this usually means a returning superstar. In past years we have had Edge and John Cena, this year are we looking at Triple  H and/or Chris Jericho? Apparently Jericho has said he is "done with wrestling" which automatically makes the sceptics amongst us think he'll be back. Triple H however is apparently itching to get back into the squared circle so it wouldn't surprise me to see him turn up on the PPV.
Ideally, the 'mark' in us would like to see a total surprise, someone who hasn't been in the WWE before or at least someone that hasn't been there for a while. As this is the 'Road To Wrestle Mania' there have been loads of rumours of 2011 Hall of Fame inductees and two that come to mind who fall into the aforementioned category are Sting and 'Macho Man' Randy Savage, who recently did an advert for a WWE video game, this along with doing a deal with Mattel for a WWE action figure could things be going good for Savage and the WWE after all these years? We'll just have to wait and see.
Someone I think who is a strong possibility of returning to the WWE after quite a while is Kevin Nash. Most recently in TNA his contract expired and it's unclear if he signed a new deal, if not, then Nash coming back to the WWE in the Royal Rumble is for mr a big possibility, he has already stated he will be at the Hall of Fame the night before WM to see his Kliq buddy Shawn Michaels get inducted.
We'll just have to wait and see. Not been a big fan of the WWE as of late but the Rumble always gets my attention.

Wrestle Mania V or VI - Which Main Event 'Did it' For You?

Recently on twitter (@WLH_Stu) I got into a discussion with some of my American friends about the main events from both WM V & WM VI. It seems the majority of them think Hogan vs. Savage from WM V was the better match whereas I believe it was Hogan vs. Warrior from WM VI. I think the Hogan/Warrior match was better because unlike the Hogan/Savage match as in I believe the WM V match result was more predictable, I mean I don't think ANYONE at the time really thought Savage was leaving Atlantic City that night with the WWF title. However, Wrestle Mania VI, was a massive encounter, WWF Champion Hogan against Intercontinental Champion Warrior. The drama of this match was great. Taking into account everyone has seen it, the more memorable spots were the test of strength, Warrior kicking out of the big leg, and then Hogan missing the big leg leading to the big splash and finish of the Warrior to crown a new WWF champion.

Most of the UK fans who commentated on my facebook thread about this seemed to go along with what I said. I thought maybe it was because SKY TV which airs WWE over here in the UK didn't become available untill late 1989 which of course was after WM V. This could be the reason, I don't know.

I await any comments below.

Discovered Another Wrestling Podcast

On iTunes I found another wrestling podcast, it's the Pro Wrestling Report show that is backed by ESPN.The show streams live on Monday nights following RAW. Their site is http://PWRShow.com and they can be found on twitter and Facebook. This recent show, Jan 17th, they had a very good interview with King Kong Bundy and scheduled for the next episode is an interview with Kevin Nash, and if Nash is on form then it should be a great interview.

With yesterday's announcement that the field of competitors would be expanded from 30 entrants to 40, that means 20 spots in the match are currently open. There has been a big surprise entrant for the last few years with Edge last year returning from an almost career ending ankle injury to win the Rumble match. Triple H whose been out since the summer with an arm injury is expected to make his 'surprise return' and seek revenge on Sheamus for injuring him. With more room in the match there could also be an appearance by a Legend or two. Maybe someone like Sgt. Slaughter or Roddy Piper.

Who do you think will win the Royal Rumble? Post your prediction below.

WWE Hall of Fame 2011.....Speculation

So the road to Wrestle Mania has begun and that includes the night before the PPV the annual Hall of Fame WWE Style. The first inductee announced is Shawn Michaels and for his in ring work I have no problem Michaels being inducted, surprised as he has only been retired a year but I think this shows his intention to stick to his word that he will never wrestle a professional match again.
As the title eludes to, speculation is rife on the wrestling radio shows, news sites and maybe some blog sites just who will be inducted along with Michaels into the HOF this year. Rumours were started as soon as it was announced the HOF and WM were in Atlanta this year that it was going to be a WCW based HOF with names such as the remaining Horsemen as Flair is already in, to be inducted as well as the likes of Bill Goldberg but word is and not sure how true it is, Triple H and Michaels have told Vince McMahon not to induct Goldberg. On the Total Wrestling Show this week, the tag team formerly known as Doom were mentioned as possibilities, now I think more people will remember Ron Simmons than they will his partner Butch Reed but Reed actually worked in the the then WWF before Simmons, Reed was on the very first Survivor Series PPV back in 1987. Simmons before being brought to the WWF in the mid 90's as Faarooq Asad under the management of Tammy 'Sunny' Sytch was the first African-American world heavyweight champion when he defeated Big Van Vader in WCW in 1992. The two as a team were first seen in the 90's in WCW which may still of been the NWA back then under masks as Doom under the management of Woman (the late Nancy Benoit) before being managed by Teddy Long now of WWE fame.

The speculation will continue and I'm sure there will be some good choices and some Koko B Ware esque ones

Val Venis - The Green Eyed Monster Rears His Head

Former WWF/WWE Intercontinental Val Venis (Sean Morley) recently went on YouTube blasting Matt Hardy, his brother Jeff and the rest of his OMEGA gang. The video is posted below but Morley just goes off on one about Matt, says he has "zero talent" now that in itself is a joke. Matt Hardy might be a lil' bit crazy with all his own YouTube ramblings but I think, he has had better matches in his career than Morley, well in North America at least, Morley had a decent career in Mexico before he joined the WWF in the late 90's. Now my point is, Venis was in the WWE for a lot longer than he should of been really because to be honest, he wasn't all that. Following his release he got to work for TNA under the Bischoff/Hogan regime but that didn't last long either. So as the title says, has the green eyed monster reared it's ugly head? Is Venis jealous that Matt as well as Jeff are employed in TNA and he is not?
I think Morley also has issues with Shane Helms (twitter.com/ShaneHelmsCom) who went on twitter some weeks ago speaking out about Shawn Michaels and how Michaels isn't all he is cracked up to be. I make no bones about it, I was totally supportive of Helms on this subject because I have a long memory in wrestling and as just a fan, when I was exposed to what Michaels and his Kliq buddies used to do back in the WWF in the 90's I automatically took a dislike to the guys. Don't get me wrong, all the Kliq had great matches in the WWF, and i hope I don't sound like a hypocrite but Michaels is probably the best worker in WWF/WWE history for that style but for me, that doesn't hold any water because what the Kliq used to do was bang out of order. They would use their 'stroke' to influence Vince McMahon and people may dislike Shane Douglas but The Kliq definatley influenced how his WWF career went. In interviews since those days in the WWF Michaels has said, Douglas stood out in ECW with his cursing etc. but when it came to the 'show' which is the WWF he just wasn't good enough but I'm sorry, I disagree and the best thing about it all was when Vince wanted Michaels to job the IC title to Douglas but that couldn't of course happen so Michaels 'handed the title over' but the Kliq got their way in the end because straight away Douglas dropped the strap to Scott 'Razor Ramon' Hall. Aswell as Douglas, Chris Candido & Tammy 'Sunny' Sytch were also on the recieving end of the Kliq's actions. To end on the Kliq, back in the day, they basically hels McMahon to ransom, there was something they wanted and if they didn't they would go on 'strike'. They all have denied this in various interviews but I wouldn't believe anything any of them would say.
I know I have gone off on one but it just pisses me off like people get pissed off by both Matt Hardy and Shane Helms on twitter but i just want to say, if your a wrestling fan, who would rather watch Val Venis and the shit he brought or the exciting high-flying style of the Hardy's or the overall great style of wrestling of Helms, I am sorry, but I'd watch the OMEGA guys.

Gone for Good? TNA TV in UK By Shaun Nichols

Since it was announced that the Bravo TV channel would be discontinued on Sky, there were a number of rumours that TNA's Impact show would be picked up and shown on another Sky channel with the likely destination being either Sky 1, Sky 2, Sky 3 or at the very least the Extreme Sports channel which showed Xplosion and the PPV events. It is certainly true that TNA Impact was one of the more popular programmes on Bravo and so in theory shouldn't have an issue in securing a new slot on a different channel.
However as a condition of the WWE's deal with Sky it's clear that the WWE don't have any intention of allowing TNA to appear on Sky and especially not on a Sky Sports channel without a fight. It took for example a long time for UFC to secure a slot for the 'Ultimate Fighter' series on Sky Sports and it will be interested to see if Sky show the next series of UFC's reality show. The WWE remains a prominent and popular part of the Sky Sports schedule and there is no reason at all to assume that Sky would risk incurring the wrath of the WWE by insisting that they will find a home for TNA.
Since the Bravo channel shut down, TNA as not found a TV home in the UK and as it stands there seems little chance that TNA Impact will be appearing on any UK channel in either full or highlight form any time soon. Worse than that TNA as lost its home with Extreme Sports who it appears decided that they wouldn't renew their contract with TNA to continue to show Xplosion, TNA Epics and more importantly the monthly PPV shows.
Impact is still available to UK fans via the TNA website without paying any fee though how many fans in the UK will take up the option to watching what is usually a pretty frustrating TV show via the delights of their website. PPV events will also be available via their website for UK fans though this time they will be charged $34.95 per show which is more than double what ROH charge for their iPPV events. I really can't see many if any fans ordering the PPV's for two reasons, firstly fans in the UK still haven't taken to the concept of purchasing PPV events. Secondly the idea that TNA believes that they can charge the same for fans watching the PPV on the website then they can for fans watching in North America in front of a TV at a reasonable time is misguided at best.
At this time it's impossible to say if the TNA will secure a new TV deal in the UK. What should also be a worry to TNA is that they could risk losing their best market, the crowds that they draw in the UK are far better than they are in the US but losing TV for any length time may mean that the crowds that they have drawn in the past where they have regularly had 2000+ crowds on most nights and places like Manchester and London have seen crowds of over 5000 are a thing of the past. The idea that TNA could draw 5000 paying fans in the US at this time is an unlikely ambition, over the last few weeks any show that draws close to a 1000 fans as to be considered a success especially with Don West performing miracles on the merchandise stand. Only time will tell if losing UK television is a major blow for TNA but it surely must have some impact on the company.

ROH Loses TV Deal on HDNet?

It is being reported on various news sites that ROH have lost their TV deal on the HDNet channel. I have not seen it confirmed but if true it's a damn shame as ROH was easily the best wrestling product on TV in North America. They consistently have had great matches both at the TV tapings, the iPPV's and of course the recorded for DVD events. ROH provided the feud of the year in wrestling with Steen vs. Generico. And of course, ROH has under contract the #1 wrestler in the world as far as UK magazine Power Slam said in the recent 'PS 50' - Davey Richards.

ROH has been overlooked recently as DGUSA has been taking a lot of plaudits recently as has it's parent company EVOLVE. Still, ROH has consistently had the best matches since it's debut show in 2002 and the 'big' companies poached their better workers.

I hope it's not true and ROH continue to stay on TV either with HDNet or someone else.

Anderson wins!!! Somewhat of a TNA Genesis recap

Just got through watching the TNA Genesis PPV, well, when I put it on the RVD match was on against his 'mystery opponent' which was to not many people's surprise, Matt Hardy. As I said, the match was already on but my God, did it drag or what?!? Hardy should of used his time off to get in shape rather than make silly videos for YouTube or post cryptic shiznit on twitter. Anyway, Hardy got the win following the 'Twist of Hate' but RVD's leg was under the rope, not spotted by the ref.
Next up was the 'MMA exhibition' match between Jeff Hardy and Kurt Angle. Just when I thought the last match was a drag, then this came along. It was awful, just plain awful. I think there was some form of DQ finish, I'd lost interest to be honest. I know one thing, there was some shoddy camera work as we could see in plain view Angle prepare to blade - tut tut.
Next up was the 'main event' Mr. Anderson vs. Matt Morgan I was like - "what"? I haven't been following TNA so didn't know the card other than Jarrett/Angle so when I saw this TNA world title number one contenders match announced as the main event I thought, Dixie, Russo, whoever really don't give a crap do they? Anderson got the win and while he was laying in the ring 'recovering' down came Eric Bischoff with a steel chair, but he didn't hit Anderson with it, he sat down and told Anderson how much he likes him and said he was now the number one contender and wouldn't have to wait for his shot and out came TNA world champion Jeff Hardy and we had an impromptu world title match. As Anderson had just finished his match, hardy had the early advantage in the match, Anderson made his comeback but eventually hardy took charge again, I think I counted three Twists of Hate that Anderson kicked out of, but I could be wrong. When he realised he wasn't getting his own way, Jeff called for big brother Matt to come down to assist but RVD came out and nixed that and the two brawled to the back. Somewhere in all this, Mick Foley came down to stop Hardy using a chair on Anderson, this brought out Ric Flair and a melee took place. Bischoff was in the ring and 'attempted' to hit Anderson with a chair but Anderson hit him with a 'mic check' rolled him out the ring and Hardy came back in, Anderson blocked whatever he attempted and hit another 'mic check' - 1,2,3 and a new TNA world heavyweight champion - Mr. Anderson!!!!

Overall from what I saw of the PPV, which wasn't much really but all the top of the card stuff, I'd have to give this show a thumbs down, in saying that, the Anderson/Hardy match did keep my attention. No idea what will happen now, will Anderson just be a transitional champion, will Hardy get a rematch or was that the whole point, he may be going to the 'big house' so won't need a title there? I have no idea but if Hardy is not the one challenging for the title, I think they should put AJ Styles in that role.

Wrestling Radio Shows in The UK - It's ON!!!!

Some time ago I did an article about wrestling radio shows here in the UK. I wasn't too favourable to MOS (Ministry of Slam) for various reasons but that's in the past now. I know I put over big time DKR (Drop Kick Radio) and I still do. Some time ago out of nowhere MOS announced they were ending it wasn't entirely sure why but alas it happened. Some weeks back, former MOS original co-host Andy Evans announced he was starting a new project this is now known as Total Wrestling Show. I have had a few online convo's with Andy and I must say, I am looking forward to the show, Andy has two friends presenting the show with him who watch products other than WWE & TNA so this should make it different from MOS from the start. Earlier today, I was told that MOS are coming back next Sunday, Jan 16th with an 8pm GMT start time. Now, I of course have no problems with MOS coming back but starting at 8pm on a Sunday they will be running the same time as DKR which starts at 7pm GMT (listening live to DKR as I type this). There has been a bit of banter in the DKR chatroom and I suggested there was going to be a 'Sunday Night War' but that was shot down straight away. I'd prefer them not to be running at the same time, MOS did originally have the Sunday night slot but when they ended, a few DKR listeners started by myself suggested that they move from Thursday's to Sunday's which they did. As of right now, I have no idea what is going to happen as far as DKR's live show, I really don't know if they are going to stick to Sundays, we'll just have to wait and see. One thing is for sure, from one UK wrestling radio show to three in quick fashion can only be good for the fans/listeners.

Please post any comments.
